Yahoo Mail Login: Securing Your Email
Everyone has their own favorite email provider. For millions of people, Yahoo is a trusted source that’s easy to use and more importantly, free. With Yahoo, it’s easy to change your password and there’s a super secure password requirement that allows you to lower your chances of getting hacked.
First, you’ll want to go to your Yahoo Mail login and sign into your account.
Changing Your Password
It’s recommended that you change your password every 3 to 6 months. This allows your password to always be new and reduces the risk that someone can enter into your account and take it over. Oftentimes, accounts are compromised without the user’s knowledge. Someone may be snooping on your email right now.
Changing your password is easy.
- Click on the gear icon.
- Click account info.
Now, you’ll be prompted to enter in your password once more. This is in place so that no one without your password can walk by and change it while you’re logged in. After entering your password, it’s time to click the Sign In button.
The remaining steps need to be followed:
- Navigate to Sign-in and Security.
- Click Change your password.
Finally, you’ll be able to enter in your password and change it.
Password Strength
Yahoo has a password strength indicator that’s highly accurate and secure. You want this bar to say that you have a strong password. This can be done by entering in a password that meets the following criteria:
- Contains one or more capital letters.
- Contains one or more numbers.
- Has a length of 8 – 32 characters.
While not a necessity, it’s highly recommended that you use symbols within your password. For instance, P!@ssw0Rd#$ is far more secure than Passw0Rd. Symbols add an extra layer of difficulty to your password, making your account more secure as a result.
The longer the password, the more secure it will be. Remember not to use any personal information within your password. For example, your home phone number or your name should not be included. Oftentimes, hackers will use phishing techniques to acquire this information and then use your information to compromise your account.
Note: Your password will be used for all Yahoo product accounts.
Yahoo also urges you to never use the same password across an array of different online accounts. This means that you won’t want to use your password from a Yahoo account on your Facebook account. This would allow an attacker to get easy access into your account if your password is compromised. Using the same password across all accounts can leave your bank accounts and financial logins in danger.
If you’re having trouble coming up with secure passwords or remembering them, you can use a password manager to make it easier to maintain all of your passwords securely. LastPass has a free option that will allow you to generate and save all of your passwords securely on their site. You can also install browser add-ons so that you can log into accounts automatically.
Difficult, long passwords will boost your Yahoo Mail login security.
